I Don’t Always Binge TV Shows, But When I Do… #MFRW

Before Netflix, and On Demand, the opportunity to binge watch television wasn’t available. That left me to suffer for a week, or more, waiting for the next installment. I adored shows like Charmed, The X-Files & Medium.

But now, like the joy of discovering an author with a series already complete, mass chunks of the story can be consumed at one time.

I’m not a frequent binger of television shows. Generally, I don’t like the commitment. I have enough obligations with the demands of my characters to open myself up to more ‘time sucks’.

But sometimes, I get hooked into a show and I want to binge as much as I can.

Usually the shows I’m drawn to have something supernatural or paranormal as the main storyline.  I can justify the time spent as research for my stories, or character analysis.

Such as my recent favorite – Outcast.  Even though there is only one season, I love this show!

(Think mysterious supernatural possession. Oh, I can’t wait until this show comes back!)

Friends of ours recommended the show I’m currently binging. I’m enjoying it, even though it’s not my usual venue. Think sex, action and graphic violence with a few secrets thrown in.

Where’s the Paranormal Stuff?

When they told me the name of the show was Banshee, in the beginning  I spent a lot of time waiting for something paranormal to happen. Until I reminded myself that this wasn’t that type of show despite having a title (banshee) tied in with a female spirit in Irish mythology.

As with any show, I find myself critiquing the storyline and the characters. Despite finding the main characters a bit lacking as far as depth (IMO) I’ve found my favorite characters in the show.

Secondary Characters Make the Show For Me

Three secondary characters have stolen my heat with their eccentric characteristics, or a depth of psychological layers. I adore Job, Clay and Sugar.

    1. Adriana- so true- if you’re looking, you can always learn something, especially for developing characters. It’s research 😉

  1. I know what you mean about being too busy with writing or other things to watch TV. I honestly cannot understand how some people watch as much TV as they do! Good list of shows, btw. I haven’t seen all of those, but I think DH has. I remember him talking about Banshee and Outcast. I will have to catch Stranger Things; I’ve heard some good feedback on that one.

    1. I know- people at the office talk about a multitude of shows that ‘everyone is watching’- except me. There are several more paranormal/supernatural ones I’d love to watch, I just haven’t had the time to invest. If you like the paranormal- don’t miss Outcast- love that show!

  2. I haven’t watched any of the shows you mentioned, but I do like paranormal and time travel. I’ve binge watched Outlander and Timeless and Once Upon a Time is waiting on my DVR.

    1. Linda, I just started reading Outlander so I’ve put off watching the shows. My sister raves about the books/show. I’m not familiar with Timeless (will need to check that out) and I want to watch Once Upon a Time.

    1. I have watched Bates as the series, Banshee I just started- I love Job- he cracks me up.

  3. Yep, binge watched Stranger Things. Also have been watching several seasons of Bones. Sometimes, I find myself more drawn to the secondary characters in my own writing, which can be a problem. It usually means they’ll end up main characters in the future. Enjoyed your post.

    1. Thanks Marissa! I have the same problem with secondary characters- I love them too much 🙂

  4. Nope…not for me.
Call me a wimp but those are not my kind of movies…I’m a Hallmark kind of gal…and Heartland of course!

Great to find out more about you though!
    Good luck and God’s Blessings

    1. I do enjoy a good Hallmark or Lifetime movie too, Pam. Thanks so much for stopping by!

  5. To me, the ensemble make a great series. I hate it when they kill off a secondary character (e.g., Watson’s wife in Sherlock). Other than X-Files, I haven’t seen any of the shows you mentioned. I’m not into paranormal the way I am with sci-fi. Enjoy your shows.

Sorry about not getting my own post up. Tried to remove my name. I double-booked. Arghhh.

  6. I reward myself with a binge when I meet a writing goal or when I need inspiration. Lately, I’ve rewatched all the Sherlocks–Moriarty is the BEST– and I’m about to launch into Outlander. I agree that the secondary characters can spice up a show–and sometimes wind up in spin offs! Happy Bloggin!

    1. My daughters love Sherlock, I’ve not checked it out yet. Thanks so much for visiting!
