Welcome to this week’s 52-week Blog Challenge for Marketing for Romance Writers with the topic of An Odd Thing I Collect. I’ve seen a few of those television shows about odd or unusual things that people collect, and I’m nowhere near that kind of oddness. I also hate clutter, so I’m always getting rid of thing such as many Knick Knacks and trinkets I may have collected when I was younger and now realize that there is no place for them.

Although there is something I have that some might consider as a bit of a collection (or hoarder tendencies when it comes to this). But not me, I think it’s more like my method of organization.

What Did You Expect? I’m a Writer

I’ve already discussed my collection of quotes. Cut out quotes, quote books and the way I randomly insert them into everything (note the lovely quote you get with each blog post—I can’t resist.)

Plus, I’m sure that me, and almost every other writer, may confess to an unhealthy obsession to sticky notes and other office products, but there is one other item that seems to leak into my day job as well…binders.

Can’t Beat a Binder

As the world pushes for less and less paper, I can’t stop myself from killing the trees by succumbing to the need to print things out so I can reference them and read them better–or is it just how nice they look and feel in a binder?

It seems that the whole out of sight is out of mind when I store stuff on my computer, who knows what I have? I like to be able to look around and find my binder and leaf through the information.

This would be a great idea if I didn’t have so many binders. Thus, it kind of continues with the problem with finding anything because I must search through all the binders lining my office, closet and desks. It seems I never have enough. But I don’t call it a collection, I call it being organized. Well, at least in my mind.

collect binders
A small portion of my collection.

No wonder I #write about trees taking on human-like characteristics in DESTINY CALLING. They’re probably seeking revenge for all the paper filling my binders. #MFRW

Creepy Collections

Now in my books I sometimes give my characters odd, or creepy collections. In DESTINY CALLING Aunt Ruthie collects dolls. You know, the creepy ones that belong in that Creepy Ass Dolls Book I got my sister (who returned it to me since it was so darn creepy). My heroine, Hope, is also uneasy around Aunt Ruthie’s plastic children.

Doll collection
              No creepy dolls for me!

More Odd Collections

MFRW collectionSo, my collection isn’t all that odd. Probably just more annoying to the other office staff I work with who see me coming with that look in my eye and they know that I am going to need another binder.

Scruff, Dog
Scruff likes to collect zzzz’s, treats and toys.

But perhaps if you hop around to check out the other author’s blogs you might discover some other odd collections. It’s entirely possible. You know how weird writers can be.

But before you go, make sure you check out the awesome limited time .99 cent sale my publisher is having for EVIL SPEAKS SOFTLY. It’s your chance to get in the spirit of the season.

Reblogged from The Snarkology Blog of Those Dastardly Villains

You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch…

But, oh I loved him. I felt bad for his green, misshapen body and unfortunate hairstyle, no wonder he was a cranky pants. Which identifies another factor that may have been the root of the Grinch’s hatefulness- he had no pants. That ‘s enough to make anyone a little cranky when you live on a snow-crusted mountain.

Now I must apologize, because if you’re anything like me that song will be stuck in your head all day.

But I digress…villains. Despite the word being one that makes me stop to consider the spelling every time I write it, I have several villains in my novel, Destiny Calling. But I’m only going to talk about one of them today, Drake. I loved writing him. His character came across so clearly in my mind that as I talk about him now I’m glancing over my shoulder fearing he might flash in at any moment.

Several of my readers have told me he was one of their favorite secondary characters in the story. That could be because a few of my villains strongest threats are heavy sarcasm and general creepiness for they, like us all, just want to find their place in the world. Or maim or kill you…

Only Max, the Grinch’s dog, stayed true to him when no one in Whoville wanted anything to do with him. My hero, Griffith, undergoes similar struggles with his relationship with Drake throughout the story because like most villains, Drake’s needs come before anyone else in his mind.

Without further ado, let me introduce you to Drake.

Starting with what, rather than who, is Drake? I’d love to tell you a little more about exactly what Drake really is, but that would give away some of the story you discover along with Hope in Destiny Calling. Here’s a little of what he had to say to describe himself while chatting with my heroine, Hope.

“I’m yours…” He winked at me. “…and everyone else’s, worst nightmare.”

“I’m your deepest, darkest fear. I’m your shortcomings, your mistakes, your secrets hidden away.” He ticked his fingers off one by one.

“Oh, I know all the dirty little secrets.” He nodded and his long locks swam around his head. “The skeletons in your closets, and…I make sure you never, ever forget them.”
I averted my gaze, absorbing his words. Despite the despair surrounding Drake, he was beautiful, as one can appreciate the beauty and grace of a predator.

Who’s your favorite villain you love to hate? Or hate to love?

If you missed me on Long and Short Reviews Spring Blog fest I’m reposting about Spring 🙂

It creeps upon us. A few degrees over freezing, a moment of being mesmerized by the round, orb in the sky until our frozen minds realize it’s the sun considering emerging from hibernation…and suddenly Springsign of spring is on it’s way.

Most notice the longer days, and that they might actually travel to and from work without the moon for company. Others comment on the budding flowers, but here in PA, I find other not so obvious signs Spring may be upon us…and no, I’m not talking about the Groundhog.

You might be from Pennsylvania if these signs of Spring sound familiar

  • My obsession with the Schoolcast website has lessoned. One morning I realize I’ve started my day without the routine of refreshing the school closings and delays a bajillion times, only to have the cancellation roll in moments before waking the munchkins.
  • I’ve not checked the weather for a day or two, and have not conversed with friends and families about when the next winter storm is about to descend. (I.e.: when to avoid the grocery store at all costs, seriously how much toilet paper do you need?)
  • I look in my closet and discover 90% of my choices are black or grey…and suddenly I have an urge to add a little color.

  • The initial excitement has long faded and I don’t know if I can stand to wear my salt encrusted, dry rotting, boots…One. More. Day— I dream of open-toed shoes and painted toenails.

  • Sign of #Spring I Resist is the eventual hibernation of the sweat pants I love and cherish
    Share on X

  • That rack I’ve intentionally avoided, ignored and scowled at, has been full of bathing suits since January- and some crazy people have been buying them, so the pickings are getting sparse.
  • The state flower has began to make an appearance. No, not the Mountain Laurel Flower (who knew we had so many PA state symbols– there’s even a proposed state toy!) but the orange construction cone should be the PA state flower, because they start budding everywhere at the first sign of spring.
  • Potholes appear out of nowhere as if an asteroid has hit the earth, leaving gaping holes big enough to lose small animals in.
  • sign of Spring In my novel Destiny Calling, another not so usual sign of spring is the emergence of motorcycles even though the snow has yet to finish melting. I haven’t seen any out yet, but it won’t be long— and I’m sure there would be if we had any Oppressors lurking…

So tell me what do you consider the first sign of Spring?
