Hello! Welcome to this week’s Marketing for Romance Writers 52-week Blog Challenge! Frankly, I’m a bit surprised you showed up with the topic of, Favorite Romance Genre to Read or Write. Because, hello, even if this is the first time you stumbled across my page there is a witch flying around here. Otherwise, my constant blather about magic may have given you a hint about my favorite. But it might surprise you to learn that I do read a little more than the fantasy and paranormal genre.

Good Writing Outdoes Genre

It’s true. Fantasy and paranormal are my absolute favorite genre to read or write. I’ve tried to write novels without fantasy and they seem lacking somehow. I read a book and I’m waiting for something out of the ordinary to happen. Therefore, it takes a really good story to hold my attention if it’s not in my favorite genre, but there are others that I enjoy reading.

Because if the #story is good enough, #genre doesn’t matter.

I have favorite books that are suspense, horror, pure romance (aka: no paranormal), you name it. It would be easier to tell you what I don’t like to read. Although even then I might be challenged.

I used to think I had a few genres that I didn’t care for at all, like historical or erotica. Then…I read a good book or two in these genres, and realized there is always the exception. I’m a reader first, and an author second, which means I’m never without reading material. If I am, you’ll find me reading a magazine, a label, or any old thing laying around.

Read Out of Your Comfort Zone

genreGoing outside my genre isn’t the norm for me. Like most people, I know what I like and I tend to gravitate toward that. As a writer, I realize the value in reading widely.

Plus, I enjoy reading books of authors I’ve come to know. I’ve also been in a Bookclub in the past in which the group chose the book—and it wasn’t always a book I’d pick. A few times I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It just shows the perks of opening your mind to other options.

scruff and Evil Speaks Softly
Scruff wishes he could read. Although that would take time away from his naps.

It’s a Blog Hop!

MFRW Blog Hop genre

Hop on around and meet some other authors to discover what they love to read or write. Perhaps you’ll pick up a new favorite, or try a new genre.

No matter what you read the important thing is that you do. Because a life without books and reading would be one of true deprivation.

My husband introduced me to all the scary movies. To my surprise I discovered the “slasher” movies featuring psycho-killers who walked at the speed of molasses but never failed to catch the fleeing victim to hack them to pieces was no where near as terrifying as the —slowly opening door.

You’d think I’d be more frightened of the freakish, merciless assassins. The ones who couldn’t be outwitted despite lacking the ability to speak should be way more terrifying. Yet, when a lamp flickers, or a shadowy figure crosses by the window I’m all like, “Things just got real.”

Welcome to this week’s Marketing For Romance Writers 52-week Blog Hop topic, Open Doors or Closed Doors. Since this is a romance writer’s blog hope, I assume the title is in reference to a love scene. So…thanks for hopping a ride on this journey along the warped roads of the crazy-train of my mind as I explain why stealthy terror frightens me more than psycho-killers. Almost the same way as I prefer to write/read a closed-door love scene rather than an open door love scene.

(Wonder no more why I must write paranormal and fantasy.)

But First—a Disclaimer

Keep in mind that this is my weird, witty (or at least attempting to be witty) opinion. I know there are a lot of people who love an open door love scene. Some find them so engrossing that they might offer themselves up as a sacrifice to a psycho-killer just to finish that chapter and get to the juicy part. That’s not me, and here are a few other reasons why.

Reason #2 Ain’t Gonna Happen

scary pic
The hubs being scary.

The psycho-killer is usually lurking in the woods near some decrepit cabin. There are usually issues with the electricity and some goofball decides it’s an ideal time to take a walk in the woods.

For one, I there ain’t no way I would be in the decrepit cabin in the first place. Then as soon as the power went out I’d get the heck out of there and back to civilization faster than I could trip over that root and wait for death while attempting to outrun the lurking lunatic.

The same way I trip over some of the words in erotic, or overly descriptive, romance and it kills the story for me. I forget about the sensual love scene while I’m trying to figure out if I’ve ever heard a man refer to his pulsating manhood as a love stick or man meat while moistness and juices are happening all over the place.

Reason #3 The Power of the Imagination

When the bedroom door opened a few inches in the movie, Paranormal Activity it scared the bajeebies (not sure exactly what bajeebies are, but no worries, they’re gone now) out of me. Not at the possibility of the attack from a malevolent spirit or demonic creature but more so because most times less is more. Anticipation and imagining what might happen next was more terrifying that being hit over the head by man meat an axe.

The subtle touch, or loving gesture, that leaves the door open to the imagination instead of observation is much more appealing to me.

The fluttering heart chasing a whispered kiss draws me deeper into a #love scene than a sloppy tongue battle. #MFRW #romance

a good thing, unless it’s cuteness. Scruff will gladly give you an overabundance of that, but he won’t save you (or me—he is a big baby) from a psycho-killer. For that, you’re on your own.

My kindle is overflowing with magical worlds, love, suspenseful stories and humorous heroines. There is never enough time in the day to read and escape into these wonderful worlds. Welcome to #MFRW 52 week blog hop where this week’s topic is Favorite Books to Read. When I first saw this topic I felt overwhelmed, wondering how I could possible identify all of my favorite books to read. Then I realized, I do tend to navigate toward a certain type of story.

You Had Me at Hell-o

I love me some magic, demons, witches, warlocks and almost any kind of fantasy world you can think up. I grew up discovering hobbits, learning to fly and learning about the magical secrets of the world. All of this while never leaving my back yard. That’s the magic of a good book.

It’s All About Me & a First Person Read

I love a story written in first person. Often this is a love or hate kind of thing with different readers. Me—I love it. I want to discover the secrets of the story along with my heroine and experience the world through her eyes.

I Just Want to Be Loved

Scruff wanting to Read
A good book is the perfect escape from the everyday.

Who doesn’t want at least a little—or a lot—of romance in a story?

The high that comes along with falling in love experienced over and over again between the pages of a book can’t be beat. Especially when you’re looking for a little escape from the everyday.

Want Me Some Kick Ass Sass

I’ve said it time and time again, I love to laugh. There’s nothing like an author who can add some genuine humor into a story. A kick ass heroine with some sarcastic wit is hard to refuse. (Don’t give me some TSTL (too stupid to live) heroine who always needs saving.)

It's okay to let the hero shine, but I love a heroine who can take care of herself. #books

My Recipe for a Good Read

I’ve read all kinds of stories, and I’m always pleasantly surprised to find a new genre, or a new author to enjoy. Although there are a few key ingredients I look for in a book to know that I’m going to love to read the story.

Magic + Hread Destiny Calling book saleumor + Romance + Kick Ass Heroine +First Person

I incorporated everything I love in a story when I wrote Destiny Calling. It’s on sale for .99 cents now for a limited time.

Who loves opening presents? The thrill of the surprise, eagerly anticipating what awaits…well that’s what every author feels like when they get the first glimpse of their newest cover design.

Today, I just happen to have another one of my Moon, Mist & Magic authors, Sharon Saracino—and Sharon also happens to be from PA…so we can call it PA 😉

Without further ado…let’s share in Sharon’s celebration and check out her cover design by the wonderful Debbie Taylor of DCA graphics for An Angel’s Song!

An Angel's Song

Can an Earthbound Angel overcome Djinn, shattered trust, and his own demons to regain the woman he loved–and lost?

A Paranormal Romance from The Wild Rose Press. Release date: TBA

Blurb for An Angel’s Song

After ten years of separation, Tessa and Alec are called to the deathbed of Tessa’s father and tasked with solving a mystery that points to WWII, the Nazi régime, and the shadowy world of the Djinn. Although their passion still burns, forgiveness requires more than desire.

Alec, the Riddle King to the Defensori, is used to shutting out the world and working on his puzzles alone. But this time, he can’t shut Tessa out. This time, he needs his estranged wife’s help. Tessa and her gift hold the key, and failure could cost her sanity…or her life.

Insecurity, immaturity, and misunderstanding drove them apart. Can they rebuild their shattered trust and work together to rescue a captive Djinni, stay one step ahead of the servants of the Fallen, and save their marriage along with Tessa’s life?

Excerpt for An Angel’s Song:

“Tessa…” he stepped toward her and held out a hand.

“Don’t you touch me,” she warned, taking a quick step back, eyeing him warily.

Okay, so maybe he’d been an oblivious jackass. Hardly the first time, but maybe it showed progress if he’d noticed without someone else pointing it out?

“Look, I could have warned you, but frankly it just never occurred to me. You’ve had a long night, and you’re tired and hurting. I get it. I’m not happy about this, but believe it or not, I really am trying to help. I’m not the bad guy here.”

“Meaning I am?” She spat, stepping right up toe to toe, crossing her arms over her chest, and craning her neck to look directly into his face. “I fly thousands of miles, watch my father die, and then, before I can even process what that means, I am grabbed by you, of all people, and spirited off against my will without so much as a by-your-leave. And you have the audacity to stand there and tell me you’re not happy about this?”

Alec decided he definitely preferred angry Tessa. Her eyes deepened to the swirling blue of an angry sea and her chest heaved, straining the buttons of the wrinkled white blouse and thrusting her high breasts against the thin fabric. With her bright eyes snapping, red-gold curls tumbling over her shoulders, and her cheeks hot and flushed, pissed or not, she was freakin’ magnificent.

I’m so glad you stopped by to join me on a magical adventure that stems from childhood and provides that same feeling of freedom and escape from the daily worries of life- bicycling.

Bicycling Opened up new roads

When I was a kid, I practically lived on a purple bicycle. It was the closest thing to flying and way faster than walking. Although I enjoyed it, for the most part, it was a means of transportation.

Then I grew up.

Once I got a car, I didn’t ride a bicycle anymore, I didn’t need to. Bicycling was for kids, anyway, wasn’t it?

Then, a few years ago, my hubby decided to begin bicycling in addition to our walking routines as another form of exercise. I was wary to join him.

I hadn’t been on a bicycle in….many, many years. I was older now, and the ground seemed much further down than it had on the small bicycle of my youth. Plus, I was more aware of how I could break things. Ie: bones & other body parts.

Then there was the whole thing about using hand brakes that had me visualizing myself becoming airborne over the handle bars if I pressed too quickly.

Evenbicyclingtually, I relented and got a bicycle. Despite my reservations (and the lack of bicycles with the brakes on the pedals like the old-fashioned ones)

I didn’t choose a purple one, but instead choose one that resembled the bicycle I remembered my older sisters and mother riding.

I graduated to the adult bicycle.

Bicycling Gave me Wings

Once I got the hang of it, I couldn't believe I hadn't considered the fun of riding a bike.

bicycling

  • I was able to explore new places in an area I lived in for years, that I hadn’t even realized existed.
  • I gained a better appreciation about the beauty of Pennsylvania
  • My hubby and I grew closer as we explored the countryside together and found new bike trails
  • I’ve viewed hidden wildlife up-close. Such as a turtle, deer, a porcupine, a multitude of chipmunks, an occasional groundhog, and unfortunately- too many little snakes.
  • I gained new muscles, and endurance, but most of all- it was as if I’d rediscovered my lost youth

The Only Other Way I Can Escape Better than on a bicycle is Through Books

bicyclingWhen I’m on a bicycle, my mind can wander (except for examining all of the sticks on the ground to make sure none are snakes!).

My chores and responsibilities are blown away as the wind whips through my hair (okay, around my helmet- I am still doing a little ‘adult-ing’ & worrying about breaking things.)

My muse comes alive and I work through story lines, as I enjoy the beauty surrounding me. If you’ve read any of my stories, (Especially Destiny Calling) you’ll see that I incorporate some of my countryside into the setting and the stories.

Occasionally there might be a bit of a sinister edge to my stories  of the woods, but that’s all part of the magical mysteries hidden within the foliage.

I’ve only ever achieved such peace through writing or reading books. It’s a joy to discover that something so simple can reap such rewards.

What’s your favorite childhood pastime? Do you continue to do it today?

Answer the question in a comment below for a chance to win your choice of one of my ebooks. Winner will be randomly drawn on

Friday, July 29th and will have 48 hours to claim their prize.

I do love a good ghost story- and several of my stories have one- but I don’t want and real life ghost adventures. (Ie: I’m  a big chicken!)

I’ve had a few times in my life that I thought I might’ve encountered a ghost. Have you? I’d love to hear about it!

My special guest, L.A. Kelley is here to explain Kindle Scout & how it benefits both readers and writers. Make sure you check out, and vote, for her book, Rimrider.

What the heck is Kindle Scout?

A few short years ago, Amazon launched a venture for new, never-before-published books where readers help decide a contract. Selected novels are published by Kindle Press and receive 5-year renewable terms, a $1,500 advance, 50% eBook royalty rate, rights reversions and featured Amazon marketing. The marketing part is a huge appeal. It’s the curse of most authors’ existence (I spit on you, hateful marketing gods!) Having Amazon shoulder the burden is a major plus.

If a book is approved, the author receives a preview link to check the data submitted along with the Kindle Scout campaign launch date. All campaigns last 30 days. The more nominations a book receives the more likely it will get the attention of the Kindle Scout team and be selected for publication.

Will the requirements make my head hurt?

Nope. Submissions are taken all year long and eligibility standards are simple. The manuscript must be submitted in English and be 50,000 words or more. Authors must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid Amazon account, and reside in a Kindle Scout–eligible country. Five categories are available: Romance, Mystery & Thriller, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Teen & Young Adult, and general Literature & Fiction.

Any downside with Kindle Scout for the author?

Isn’t there always? The author is responsible for the book’s cover art. It must look professional, be ready to go when the manuscript is submitted, and satisfy Amazon’s specifications. Unless you’re a professional graphic designer, you’ll have to shell out money for an artist. The manuscript should also be professionally edited, free of typos and grammar errors. Paying for a good editor is a must. Kindle Scout doesn’t offer hardcovers or paperbacks, so if an author wants something to hold in his or her hot little hand, the printing cost are shouldered alone. For some, the lack of marketing decisions can be irksome. Amazon has total control. An author can’t run a 99 cent sale or post the first book in a series for free to drum up interest in the rest. Finally, the terms of the contract state that the book will only be available on Amazon, so bye-bye Barnes and Noble, any other site, and all ereaders who can’t open a MOBI file.

What’s the benefit to the reader?

You’re allowed to vote for three nominations.

If your choice is a winner, Amazon will send you a free copy of the ebook upon publication.

No muss. No fuss. The only cost was a few minutes of your time to check out the book. You also get to proudly strut around the room and brag to others about supporting indy writers.

Who the heck are you?

I’m a fantasy/science fiction indy writer with five published books with a small press and a book now a Kindle Scout nominee. I live in Florida, slathered in sunscreen, and prefer air-conditioned comfort to heat and humidity. On the plus side, my skin will never look like badly laid roofing shingles. Here are my lurking spots if you care to lurk with me:

Be honest. Do you think you really have a shot?

Let’s put it this way…Amazon labels the popular Kindle Scout nominations in the smoking hot category. Even as a teenager I was only found in the dorky and peculiar category. The odds aren’t great, but if you don’t try, you can’t succeed. That being said I would great appreciate a vote for Rimrider by L. A. Kelley. It’s a science fiction space opera about a teenage girl who becomes a space pirate. Imagine the American Revolution with Earth as the redcoats and the colony planets as Yankee rebels and you get the idea. Intrigued? Click on the link and heartfelt thanks for taking a peek.

Don’t Forget to Vote for L.A.’s book Rimrider
