My Creativity Outside of My Characters

Welcome to this week’s Marketing for Romance Writers (#MFRW) with the topic of Creative Outlets I Enjoy. If you’re here then you’re already very aware of how much I enjoy writing as a creative outlet. You’ve probably heard about how when I take time off from the day job, or go on vacation, I still make time for writing. Whether it’s as a freelance healthcare writer, composing poetry, and of course, writing magical fiction stories.

Fiction writing isn’t work to me. It’s what I believe I was meant to do and what I would continue to do even if I never published another one of my stories. But I won’t belabor you with this topic by going into more details about this creative outlet. I just discussed my love of dancing last week. So, hmm…let’s talk about other creative outlets. The one’s I enjoy—and some that I don’t.

My Second, or Third, Choice in Creativity

Back in the day…I mean way back in the day during elementary school, I was an artist. I mean, it was my thing. Well, creativeparticularly my ability to draw a horse or a unicorn. I had the elementary kids lining up for me to create their very own drawing. I’d always loved to draw and pretty much it was a family thing. My Mom could draw, as could my sisters. I’d write my short stories and illustrate them or make little comic books.

I initially planned on being an artist like my eldest sister, although I soon learned I would probably never be as good as her—and that kids have a short attention span. Soon the ungrateful kids moved on to the next big thing and my talent got pushed back to yesterday’s news.

I kept on sketching and drawing, but I never pursued it seriously. Besides, by then I was dreaming of being a Solid Gold dancer. But then we all know how that turned out. (Darn them for cancelling that show!)

Got Creativity? Nope

I’m a creative person. At least I think so. Although many other creative outlets I’ve tried my hand on did their best to prove me wrong. It’s not for my lack of trying new things, it’s more for my continuous failing. They’re supposed to be enjoyable, right? Helping to relieve stress and not cause more stress on their own, right?

Crafts– They always sound like a good idea, but they never come out looking like they’re supposed to. Sometimes I’m convinced I inspired the whole, “nailed it.” meme

Dog, Scruff
I think Scruff got a look at that stuffed bear.

Sewing- Don’t look for my junior high Home Economics teacher or find that hideous bear I made. The horror. (For the teacher, and the product could star in one of those horror movies where the hideous creatures come to life seeking revenge.)

Cross stitching-Tried several times. Failed it.

Knitting-Even took knitting club in high school. Nada talent.

Singing-In the shower and the car —I’m a superstar! Too horrified to do it anywhere else. You won’t catch me doing Karaoke.

Woodworking –I traded drawing the pictures on the wood to have the boys do all the woodworking with the heavy machinery. I valued my fingers too much—good thing, I need them to write!

Use the Magic You Got

So, you see, I should stick with writing. Besides loving my stories and my characters, and how it’s nothing like work to me. But instead it’s just part of me.

I’ve come to embrace my best creative outlet —that’s my #magic. #MFRW #amwriting Click To Tweet
